Throughout development, surface moisture significantly increased skin permeance. The effect was largest during early development and decreased towards maturity. Recovery time courses revealed that following moisture treatment of young fruit for 12 days, skin permeance continued to increase until about 14 days after terminating the moisture treatment.

The contribution of lenticels differed among cultivars averaging in the cheek region 19 in Wellant and 8 in Pinova apple. The permeance of the periderm of a lenticel exceeded that of a russeted fruit skin 5.8 fold in Wellant and 5.2 fold in Pinova . Skin permeance was positively and significantly related to both lenticel density and cumulative lenticel area within a region or between regions in Wellant .

Inducing ripening using ethylene increased autocatalytic ethylene production, induced a change in skin color from green to yellow, but had no effect on the skin water vapor permeance. The permeance was highest at the calyx end of the fruit but there was no significant gradient of permeance along the remaining axis or among the three faces of the fruit.

A ZIF 7 nano filler that was synthesized in our lab was embedded into a designed polymer matrix at various loadings and the performance of the mixed matrix membranes was evaluated in terms of gas permeance and selectivity. Hybrid membranes with various loadings 20, 30 and 40 wt were developed and tested at room temperature by a custom made time lag equipment and a jump in selectivity was observed when compared with the pristine polymer.
